About Alexander Hjelvik
I am Norwegian and in my thirties. I have a background as a security guard with a vocational certificate, I have multiple degrees across emergency preparedness, crisis management, civil protection and management of demanding operations, and have worked within these disciplines. In other words, a lot of focus on ethics, trust, accountability, safety and protection. I have recently started training for international endurance events - i.e. ultra running (ultra walking really), which has me seeking out time for longer walks with a heavier backpack (which goes really well with a dog).
I have previously had my own dogs (two siblings; mix of German shepherd, retriever and rottweiler - one was a rescue dog with some difficult years behind her), and I have experience with taking care of rescue dogs (as many as 19!) full-time at a kennel for these in Alaska.
The latter experience was over two weeks and included many different types of dogs, including elderly dogs with disabilities such as a lack of vision and little to no function in the hindlegs. I am a very responsible person and genuinely care about the dogs I am around. I'm the one who, when visiting other people, lies on the floor with the host's dog(s). Naturally, I have also been dogsitting for friends and their dog breeds as well.
When I walk a dog, there is 100% focus on back-and-forth communication with the dog. I do not get distracted from the dog I am responsible for - ever. There is no phone-distraction or anything else - even when walking with others, just the dog(s) and me. The constant communication back and forth has proven to be great both for training and stimulation, but also in creating predictability in behavior and trust between myself and the dog(s). I am able to maintain a zero-tolerance for unwanted/undesirable people coming close to the dog I walk with. The dogs around me are always, always my first priority and I can be very protective.
For a potential client, I am ready to share both dog sitter reviews and a cloud-folder of images pertaining to the aforementioned experiences for verification and for catching the natural vibe, so to speak.
